What’s the Story?
The city of Charleston, South Carolina adopted a ban of single-use plastic straws in late 2018. By January 1, 2020, all businesses must discontinue distribution, sale, and use of plastic straws. While other cities and towns in the state have similar bans of plastic bags, Charleston is the first to target single-use plastic straws.
How Would the Ban Affect Me?
If your restaurant supplies straws that are made of a sustainable alternative—like wheat, stainless steel, paper, or bamboo—then you’re good to go: you don’t need to change anything. However, if you currently supply single-use plastic straws, you’ll be required to comply with the new law by the end of this year. Your business has the option of extending the deadline by one year.
How Can I Stay Compliant?
Under the new law, all restaurants must discontinue use of single-use plastic straws, among other items banned by the same ordinance—plastic bags and foam containers. However, you may continue providing straws made of a reusable or compostable alternative to plastic. HAY!
