What are HAY! Products made of?
Our Original HAY! Straws and Stir Sticks are made from the stem of the wheat plant a byproduct of wheat production. Wheat is typically grown for its grain, which gets made into flour and other food products. Once the wheat plant reaches maturity and turns golden yellow, the grain is harvested off. The wheat stems get cut and made into things like hay for animal feed and, in our case, straws. They are tested as gluten-free and are made from non GMO wheat stems.
Our Jumbo collection is also 100% natural and made from plant stems of a different plant species (it's a secret) and come in Jumbo, Jumbo XL and Boba size. Jumbo straws are allergen free and have a thicker wall and wider diameter than our Original HAY! straw. They are perfect for thicker drinks like smoothies, milkshakes, blended ice drinks and boba tea.
Minimally Processed + Ethically Sourced and Produced
We source our wheat and plant stems from small, local farmers in Eastern Europe and South East Asia. Purchasing the plant stems from farmers offers an additional income to their harvest crops and provides work in rural communities. We hand select the best quality stems for our HAY! Straws and then cut them into drink sized lengths—about five and eight inches.
No two straws are ever the same, because of naturally occurring variance in the plant. Our straws then go through a cleaning process to remove any speck of dirt, or even insects. No chemicals, coatings or additives are added during the manufacturing process. The straws are then dried through a commercial, food grade drying system to dry and sterilize the straws. They are carefully checked for quality, then hand-packed into our cardboard boxes, adding the final plastic-free packaging touch.
Our main production facilities are located in China and the Ukraine, where we follow the the FDA's Food and Safety guidelines for producing food contact products. The production management team uphold the highest standards of occupational health and safety, and humane work hours and wages are enforced. The facilities are independently audited and we also visit every quarter to make sure the highest quality and ethical standards are being met.
