Are Hay! Straws suitable for hot drinks?
Yes! HAY! Straws can be used in both hot and cold drinks — and unlike paper, they won’t get soggy.Because wheat stems are naturally water-resistant, our straws hold their shape in liquids over time. While plastic and bioplastic straws can melt or soften in high heat, HAY! Straws maintain their structure even in boiling water (100°C / 212°F).
Are HAY! Straws® gluten-free?
Yes, our straws are gluten-free and verified by independent third-party laboratory testing. Our Original Straws and stir sticks are made from the stem of a wheat plant, which typically doesn't contain gluten (that's in the grain). The Gluten-Free Organization's standards for a food or product to be gluten-free is under 10ppm, and our testing results have always returned negative or undetectable levels of gluten. To ensure our customers' safety, we periodically batch test our straws for gluten, and we are always happy to provide our customers with our gluten-free laboratory results—just ask!
Do the Original Hay! Straws made from wheat stems contain wheat?
Yes, Original Hay! Straws® and stir sticks are made from the stem of the wheat plant, so they contain wheat stems, not wheat grain. Typically, most wheat allergies are from the ingestion of wheat, but Hay! Straws® are not intended to be eaten or digested and should only be used as a straw to drink various liquids. We recommend people with a wheat allergy consult their allergen expert before using them. Our wider Jumbo Slim, Jumbo and Boba Straws are all wheat and gluten-free and are made from reed plant stems.
I have allergies to hay or grass. Can I use a HAY! Straw®?
Hay and grass allergens can vary from person to person, and everybody is different. If you suffer from severe touch allergies to hay or grass, we recommend you consult your doctor or allergist before using Original Hay! Straws® made from wheat stems. Our wider Jumbo Slim, Jumbo, and Boba Straws, are made from reed plant stems and are allergen-free.
Are there any chemichals in HAY! Straws?
HAY! Straws are 100% natural with no chemicals added during cleaning and processing. We rinse them multiple times and no cleaning or added chemicals are ever used here.
Do the Original HAY! Straws have a taste?
No, our straws don't have a lingering taste.
How are your HAY! Straws cleaned?
Our straws are rinsed multiple times in water, then sterilized using UV light and heat with a food-grade system that removes moisture and microbes. They’re independently lab tested for chemical residues to ensure they meet food-safe standards and are PFAS-free and safe for both children and adults.
What drinks are the Original wheat stem straws most suitable for?
HAY! Original Straws are versatile and perfect for thin beverages. They work beautifully with cold drinks like cocktails, soda, iced tea, juice, and iced coffee. They’re also great for hot drinks such as coffee, tea, lattes, and hot chocolate. Their natural wheat-stem material means they won’t go soggy or melt in your drink.
Do HAY! Straws go soggy?
No. HAY! Straws don’t get soggy and can last in a drink for 72+ hours. Because wheat stems are naturally water-resistant, they stay sturdy—unlike paper straws. They feel similar to plastic and become slightly flexible after absorbing moisture, while still holding up in both hot and cold drinks.
How long does a wheat stem HAY! Straw take to decompose?
42 days in a commerical compost facility and we have the tests to proove it. Backyard composting is usally a bit slower so we estimate 45-60 days.
Are the wheat stems genetically modified?
No, our HAY! Straws are non-GMO. Almost all wheat grown in the world is non-GMO because wheat varieties can be naturally bred and do not require genetic modification to achieve desired results. Our straws are not formally certified yet, but this is something we are looking to complete.
Can you eat HAY! Straws?
No. HAY! Straws are not intended to be eaten. Biting down on the straw may cause it to crack or reduce its structural integrity. They have a natural flex—similar to plastic—and can still be used to sip after being bitten, but the diameter may narrow.
Are HAY! Straws marine degradable?
Yes. If they end up in rivers, lakes, or oceans, HAY! Straws break down like natural plant matter. Because they’re made from 100% wheat stems, they decompose similarly to hay or leaves. We estimate marine degradation takes 6–8 months. While marine testing standards are being redefined, we do know our Original HAY! Straw breaks down in 42 days in a commercial compost facility, and our Jumbo Straws in 60–90 days.
